Recorded with acclaimed producer Ben Allen (who has previously worked on great records such as Animal Collective’s ‘Merriweather Post Pavillion’, Gnarls Barkley’s ‘St. Elsewhere’ and ‘Halcyon Digest’ by Deerhunter) ‘Within And Without’ is a full realisation of the excitement Greene stoked with his first release, 2009′s ‘Life Of Leisure’ EP (Mexican Summer). That record saw Greene catapulted from his quiet, reclusive life in rural Georgia to blog darling status almost over night – scoring highly in many end of year polls and inspiring innumerable imitators in thrall to the organic way in which it immersed its big-hearted, anthemic pop songs in a deeply psychedelic, genre-defying dance energy.

I’ve been waiting since last summer to see Washed Out live, so I’m a bit gutted to find out their/his Manchester show clashes with Lucy Rose at the Ruby Lounge. Will try my best to see both :)

Following these debut European summer shows Washed Out will be supporting Cut Copy during their Sept/Oct US tour (according to Prefix Mag)

The Beta Band – Shepherds Dub (Steve Lamacq’s Bootleg Session)

‘Shepherds Dub’ is a Beta Band gem from the archives that never received a commercial release, but was featured as part of a free cassette from Melody Maker on 7th March 1998.

It turns out the actual sample used is taken from Countdown To Armageddon by Public Enemy (something I’m ashamed to admit I only just discovered via Google) – but this tune was one of my first introductions to the wonderful world of The Beta Band. Sample heavy, deep dub bass, pots and pans percussion – a stark contrast to the safe indie of The Charlatans and The Verve I was listening to at the time.

A quick Google search reveals the session was recently repeated on BBC 6 Music on The Live Hour, 14th May 2011, Gideon Coe, 31st March 2011 and Gideon Coe (again), 3rd August 2010 – along with the tracks ‘Monolith’ and ‘B & A’.

From what I read on the BBC blurb it may actually have originated from a John Peel sesison dated 10th September 1997.

There’s an incredible amount of talented bands emerging from the North-East at the moment. This 13-track compilation album A North East Invasion has been curated by Generator (a Newcastle-based music development agency, set up to help local bands in the area). The CD was given away free during May to delegates at The Great Escape in Brighton and Liverpool Sound City (where I picked up mine last Friday!). There’s some great tracks on here – check out the tunes by Lanterns On The Lake, Let’s Buy Happiness, Polarsets, Cattle & Cane and Grandfather Birds. Find out more here.
