Nathaniel Rateliff was supporting Caitlin Rose tonight at the Manchester Academy 3 (Tuesday 26th July 2011). First time I’ve heard of him and I was really blown away.

This song embedded below is called Shroud – take a listen. Apologies for the shaky camera work – it was shot on a 70-200mm lens which is seriously heavy (1.5kg) and probably not ideal for handheld videos. Definitely need to invest in a monopod/tripod or a Steadicam-esque rig. Sound is from the in-built mic on the 5DmkII.

I set up my Panasonic Lumix TZ7 at the side of the stage on a small tripod and filmed the Let’s Buy Happiness show on Friday. I had intended to team up the video with some soundboard audio, but that didn’t quite work out. The tripod didn’t do a great job either unfortunately — the video seems to keep vibrating with the bass. The LED lights posed a problem too as a 1/3rd of their cycle was bright red, which completely confused the camera + autofocus.

I also shot a few songs on my Canon 5dmkII – the video quality is much better as you’d expect (although I still messed up the white balance/focus on the red lights). I’ll upload the 5dmkII footage later this week if I can sync it up with some better audio than the in-camera mic.

Here’s an alternate video of ‘Clean Mistake’ below that I shot on my Canon 5DmkII. The video quality is much better, but again the red LED lights pretty much throw off my exposure/white balance etc. If you skip to 1m11 (when the light cycle is white/blue for 10 seconds) it looks great. If anyone can offer me advice on how to improve, then please leave a comment at the bottom. I mainly use my camera for photos and I’m only just beginning to learn how the video side of things work. The audio from the onboard mic isn’t as good as the Lumix TZ7, so it distorts a fair bit.

Be sure to change the quality setting to 1080p if your computer/internet connection can handle it :)

Ghost Outfit at Manchester Deaf Institute (12th April 2011)

Ghost Outfit were a last-minute support slot addition to the Steve Mason show at the Manchester Deaf Institute on Tuesday 12th April 2011. Despite going up against the Man Utd/Chelsea Champions League quarter-final match they pulled a decent crowd. My intention was to skip across from The Footage next door at half-time and maybe catch a few minutes of Ghost Outfit, but I ended up staying for the whole show :)

I did take a fair few photos, but for the moment here’s a video I shot below. The audio quality and camerawork isn’t great I’m afraid – I actually wasn’t planning on putting it online, but after reading @thepigeonpost’s Tweet I thought I’d dig it out of the archive:

Wu Lyf video at Manchester St Peters Church (24th Nov 2010)

I shot a few clips of video at last night’s Wu Lyf gig. The main reason I’m uploading them is hopefully in a year’s time when I’ve got to grips more with this camera, I can look back and see a real progression. At the moment my shots are shaky, out of focus and poorly exposed. I also need to invest in a decent external microphone, because the internal mic on the Canon 5dmkII clearly can’t cope with loud concerts :)
